definition

Individuals with Mental Disabilities, previously referred to as Mental Retardation, are those who have significantly lower than average intelligence and experience difficulty with daily living skills. Mental Disabilities vary greatly from mild to extremely severe, although people with mild disabilities account for eighty-five to ninety percent of all those identified.

Mental Disabilities are the result of biological factors and are sometimes associated with chromosomal abnormalities. Children with mental disorders develop intellectually and physically more slowly than their non-disabled peers. They need more time to learn new skills, and they may have particular difficulty with language, perception, memory and social skills.
